Be Kind Rewind - Update

Tonight I am thinking about seeing Mos Def and Jack Black in their new movie, Be Kind Rewind. It is written and directed by Michel Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep fame. It will likely be the later show 7 and 12 (CST) because a few of my friends work a bit later. I think this comedy is going to be quite entertaining and I will post a review either after the movie or tomorrow.

Update: Went to the 11:55 show and I really enjoyed it. It was actually quite different than what I expected from the trailers. There is actually a multi-tiered story here; the store needing to be knocked down/ condemned, getting money to save it, having the tapes erased, and the side element of a jazz player's past. All these elements add to a pretty good story. In some situations I would have like a bit closer of a cut for editing where it was solid, chronologically speaking. Gondry's normal artistic visions are still here but in a very different form including over the top black and white motion captures, stop-motion magnet to metal movement, and the actual remade scenes of the movies. As predicted, Jack and Mos really pulled this one off well. Jack Black's performance in this movie is actually a very good contender for his top of all time. Some of the minor characters on the other hand seemed to have been novices of the film industry but in most scenes this worked because they were acting for a movie (in the movie).

Overall I would have to rate this movie an A- for the amazing creativeness and great acting. It's a boat of laughs and is a great movie for anyone, although I don't think children would pick up on everything and possibly get lost.
